Bill Koon writes a bi-monthly opinion column on the editorial page. He is a South Carolina
native and a professor of English at Clemson University, where he teaches courses
in American and Southern literature. He is the editor of the two-volume collection
Classic Southern Humor and an anthology of Civil War fiction, Old Glory and the
Stars and Bars. His most recent book, Hank Williams, So Lonesome, is generally
recognized as the standard biography of the country musician. He has twice been
chair of the English Department at Clemson, and he was a senior Fulbright lecturer
in southern literature to Austria. He lives in Greenville with his wife, Gabriele
Scheiber, and their daughter Mattea.
